Movement Building through Aarohan
Building a broader South Asian women's
movement in the U.S has been one of the core objectives of
Manavi's programs. To this end, we have organized 3 national
conferences called Aarohan which are exclusively meant
for South Asian Women's Rights Organizations (SAWO's)and advocates
working to end violence against women in the U.S. Aarohan
was envisioned as a space that would encourage networking,
communication and dialog between SAWO's and enhance the exchange
of strategies to end violence in the South Asian community
in the U.S.
Manavi
hosted its Fourth National Conference, Aarohan 2008, from
September 19th to 20th in New Brunswick, NJ.

Diversity/Cultural Sensitivity Training
Manavi members provide in-service
training for direct intervention workers in mainstream human
service agencies. Each year, Manavi staff and members speak
at various conferences, meetings, and public rallies on issues
and concerns relating to violence against South Asian women.
Manavi believes in strengthening the
capacity of mainstream institutions so that they can address
issues of violence against South Asian women in a comprehensive
and culturally sensitive manner. To this end we provide cultural
competency training to mainstream domestic violence agencies,
non-profit organizations and governmental entities like the
police, courts, county based Domestic Violence Response Teams
(DVRT), and Prosecutor's offices.
If you are an organization working
to end violence against women, that has faced challenges in
serving South Asian battered women, Manavi can be a helpful
resource to you. If you would like to receive cultural competency
training that can equip you with the skills needed in better
serving South Asian survivors please contact us at manavi@manavi.org
